OLYMPIA
The capital city of the State of Washington is conveniently located between Seattle to the north and Portland to the south, with Mt Rainier and the Cascade Mountains providing majestic scenery to the east, the Olympic Mountains to the North, and the Black Hills to the west.
Olympia became the capitol of Washington in 1889. Today residents and visitors enjoy the capitol campus which includes an impressive 82-year-old CapitolBuilding. It is the last great domed capitol built in the United States and was completed in 1928.
Today the area is rich in people, interests and lifestyles supported by an abundance of outdoor activities, cultural opportunities and well respected educational institutions. Outdoor recreation is popular, with skiing in the mountains, the Pacific Ocean is an hour away, and with an abundance of water activities in Puget Sound and in the numerous lakes found in the area.
The rich heritage, history and culture of Olympia is reflected in the downtown galleries, unusual shops and specialty restaurants tucked among the historic buildings. Within walking distance are many visitor attractions.
HeritagePark Fountain. Splash in Olympia's Heritage Park Fountain at 330 5th Avenue SW in downtown Olympia (closed Wednesdays). Bring a picnic lunch. Enjoy scenic views of the Capitol dome to the south and the Olympic Mountains to the north. Public restrooms are located across 5th Avenue at Heritage Park which is maintained by the State of Washington.
Percival Landing. One and a half miles of boardwalk with a view of Puget Sound, the Olympic Mountains, and the Capitol dome. Artwork and interpretive displays outline the history of the harbor.
Olympia's Hands on Children's Museum. Consistently voted the "Best Place To Take Kids" in regional and national polls, the Hands on Children's Museum is one of the Northwest's premier youth museums! Designed for children and parents to enjoy together, the Museum features four major exhibit galleries with hundreds of interactive exhibits, a Young at Art Studio, and the TotSpotEarlyLearningCenter designed for children ages birth to four. Olympia's Farmers Market. Your visit to the CapitalCity isn't complete without a stop at the largest farmers market in WashingtonState, the Olympia Farmers Market. Picturesquely located at Olympia's waterfront, foot of Capitol Way. Open April thru October - Thursday thru Sunday, 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.; November and December - Saturday and Sunday, 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
